8tickers - new features since June
Notes on what I added to 8tickers.com over the summer: a dark redesign, a live home page, insider transactions, a richer news feed, and more.
In April I wrote a small post about 8tickers, my free screener for undervalued stocks. Since then I did not stop working on it, and over the summer a lot of things were added. So here is a list of what changed since the start of June, with short explanations and only a little technical detail.
A new look
The biggest change is the design. The whole site is dark now. It is a dark background with a mint to blue accent. The favicon is new too, and on mobile there is a bottom tab bar instead of the old menu. It just looks better in the evening, which is usually when I check stocks.
The home page
Before, the home page was mostly a title and a button. Now it has a band of live widgets. There is a latest news slider, a block of top stocks where you can switch between value and growth, the earnings for the current week, and the economic calendar for the same week. So you get some useful data right on the first screen, without opening the screener first.
Besides this, the earnings widget shows beat or miss now, with the actual EPS in green or red, the same as on the earnings page.
Insider transactions
This one is a completely new page. It shows insider buys and sells, grouped by day, so you can see which company officers and directors were trading, and how much. Also I added a filter for buy or sell. The data comes from public filings, and I keep only the open market trades, because grants and gifts are mostly noise. It syncs in the background on a schedule.
A richer news feed
The news section changed a lot. Every article has a cover image now, and it is fetched automatically. On top of the list there is a Market Pulse tape with the biggest names and their five-day change. Below it there is a Trending Tickers block with the biggest movers, and for it you can switch between all, gainers and losers.
Earnings
I moved the earnings data to a single, more reliable source, and the beat or miss numbers fill in faster after a company reports. There were also some duplicated rows when a company shifted its report date, and I collapsed those. Not very visible, but the calendar is more correct now.
Faster and easier to read
I spent some time on loading speed, mostly on the phone. News covers are served as smaller WebP and AVIF images, the main image loads first, and some heavy parts load only when they are needed. Also I raised the contrast in a few places, so the small grey text is easier to read on the dark theme.
Privacy
I added a cookie consent banner and the usual data rights.
Small things
A few smaller fixes that are worth mentioning:
- Price alerts do not fire again on a frozen weekend price.
- 52-week ranges for ADRs with fractional ratios, like TKC, are correct now.
There is more that I did not list here, mostly small fixes and internal work. But these are the parts you can actually see. So I would be happy if you take a look at 8tickers.com.
